There are two instruments generally called dulcimers:

• Mountain Dulcimer
  These are fretted instruments and are played in a variety of styles using everything from fingertips to feathers. 
• Hammered Dulcimer
  As the name indicates, these instruments are struck with small sticks called hammers. Similar instruments are found in cultures around the world.
